A Veterinary Surgeon is a licensed DVM / VMD who has completed advanced, AVMA-accredited residency training in small animal surgery. They specialize in performing complex surgical procedures involving soft tissue, orthopedics, trauma care, and advanced minimally invasive techniques.They conduct pre-surgical evaluations, interpret imaging for surgical planning, perform procedures such as fracture repair, cruciate ligament surgery, oncologic surgery, thoracic and abdominal surgery, and arthroscopy. Veterinary Surgeons manage post-operative care, collaborate with anesthesia and critical care teams, and often assist with advanced surgical case consultations. In the USA, they must hold state licensure and typically achieve board certification through the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS).This role is commonly searched as “ACVS Surgeon,” “Board-Certified Veterinary Surgeon,” “Small Animal Surgeon,” and “Veterinary Soft Tissue or Orthopedic Surgeon.” Veterinary Surgeons work in specialty hospitals, referral centers, and teaching institutions, providing advanced surgical expertise across a wide variety of clinical cases.
