A Veterinary Neurologist is a licensed DVM / VMD who has completed advanced, AVMA-accredited residency training in veterinary neurology and neurosurgery. They specialize in diagnosing and treating disorders of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and neuromuscular system.They perform advanced diagnostics such as MRI, CT, CSF analysis, electrodiagnostics, and specialized neurological examinations. Veterinary Neurologists manage conditions including seizures, intervertebral disc disease, inflammatory CNS disease, neuropathies, and brain or spinal tumors. Many are also trained to perform neurosurgical procedures such as hemilaminectomies, craniectomies, and decompressive spinal surgery. In the USA, they must hold state licensure and typically achieve board certification through the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in Neurology.This role is commonly searched as “Veterinary Neurology Specialist,” “ACVIM Neurologist,” “Neurology Veterinarian,” and “Board-Certified Veterinary Neurologist.” Veterinary Neurologists work in specialty hospitals, referral centers, and teaching institutions, providing advanced neurological care and collaborating closely with surgical and critical care teams.
