Our client is an emergency and critical care hospital in Yorktown, Virginia, seeking an ER Medical Director to lead their expanding after-hours service. This hospital provides essential emergency care to small animals and select exotic pets, supporting the community during nights, weekends, and holidays when urgent veterinary expertise is needed most. Working Hours / Rota
The hospital operates exclusively during after-hours, allowing the Medical Director to work within a defined ER schedule while guiding the development and oversight of the service. Weekday shifts run from 5:30pm to 8:00am, with both daytime and overnight shifts available on weekends. The role offers flexible full-time scheduling while maintaining a consistent emergency rotation. There are no daytime general practice obligations, allowing complete focus on emergency medicine and leadership.

Role Description and Responsibilities
The ER Medical Director will oversee all clinical functions of the emergency service, ensuring exceptional patient care, consistent medical standards, and a positive, collaborative workplace culture. This includes performing advanced triage, diagnostics, stabilization, treatment planning, and emergency surgical procedures while mentoring veterinarians and support staff in best practices. The Medical Director will help shape medical protocols, refine workflow, foster strong communication, and play a key role in the continued growth of the hospital’s after-hours program. Experienced emergency veterinarians with strong leadership ability are ideal for this role, although the hospital is open to supporting clinicians who wish to grow into a leadership position.

Practice Details
The hospital is equipped with advanced diagnostic imaging, digital radiography, ultrasound, and comprehensive in-house laboratory capabilities. The emergency surgical suite, in-house pharmacy, oxygen therapy, and critical care monitoring systems support the delivery of rapid, life-saving medicine. Services include emergency examinations, urgent surgical procedures, stabilization, wound management, fluid therapy, and treatment of trauma, toxicities, respiratory distress, and other critical conditions. The practice culture emphasizes teamwork, trust, communication, and a supportive environment where clinicians and support staff work seamlessly together.

Team
The hospital is supported by a team of three dedicated emergency veterinarians and a highly skilled group of licensed technicians and support staff who are experienced in ER workflows and patient stabilization. The Medical Director will lead this cohesive team, encouraging professional growth, supporting continuing education, and ensuring consistency in clinical standards and patient care.

Candidate Requirements 

• Must hold the relevant degree(s) and additional qualifications to work as a veterinarian in the United States of America (USA)
• Must hold, be in the process of, or be able to obtain, a state license for the state they are applying to work in
• Must have the right to work in the United States of America (USA), or be able to obtain the required visa to do so
