Combining the close-knit feel of a community practice with the resources and support of a wider veterinary network, this companion animal hospital in Thousand Oaks, California is looking to welcome a full-time Veterinary Medical Director. Providing primary and preventive care for dogs and cats, the hospital has a strong focus on personalized medicine, client education and creating lasting relationships with the families it serves. It’s a nice opportunity for an experienced veterinarian who wants to remain hands-on clinically while having a genuine influence over the people, standards and future direction of the hospital.

Role Description and Responsibilities
This role combines day-to-day clinical practice with responsibility for leading the medical side of the hospital. You’ll work in partnership with the Practice Manager and wider hospital leadership team to maintain high clinical standards, support hospital performance and create a positive environment where the veterinary team can continue developing. A big part of the position is mentoring and coaching Associate Veterinarians, helping recruit and retain strong veterinary talent and providing the clinical guidance people need to feel confident in their work. You’ll also contribute to hospital decision-making and use performance data to help identify opportunities for improvement, while continuing to lead by example through your own patient care. As a Medical Director, you’ll have access to a dedicated Medical Leadership Program alongside one-to-one mentorship and ongoing leadership development.

Practice Details
The hospital provides a full scope of GP services, with preventive medicine, diagnostics, dentistry and surgery all forming part of the clinical offering. Diagnostic capabilities include laboratory testing and diagnostic imaging, while the hospital also provides routine and soft tissue surgical care alongside its everyday medical caseload. The practice is Better Business Bureau accredited and also provides pet bathing services. The hospital is currently open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with some Saturday availability depending on the schedule, and there are no after-hours Emergency or on-call requirements.

You’ll be working alongside an established veterinary and support team within a hospital that places a strong emphasis on collaboration, education and creating a genuinely positive working environment. As Medical Director, you’ll play an active part in developing the veterinarians around you rather than simply overseeing them from a distance, with responsibility for coaching, mentorship, recruitment and helping people progress towards their individual goals. The wider clinical network also gives you additional resources and veterinary expertise to draw on, while dedicated Medical Excellence and Education support means you’ll have people to bounce ideas off as you continue developing in the leadership side of your own career.

Candidate Requirements 

• Must hold the relevant degree(s) and additional qualifications to work as a veterinarian in the United States of America (USA)
• Must hold, be in the process of, or be able to obtain, a state license for the state they are applying to work in
• Must have the right to work in the United States of America (USA), or be able to obtain the required visa to do so
