Job Description
Introduction
For an experienced veterinarian ready to have a bigger influence on the clinical direction of a hospital, this full-service practice in Santa Rosa, California is looking to welcome a full-time Medical Director. Providing care for dogs, cats, birds and exotic pets, the hospital has been part of the Sonoma County community since 1967 and combines a broad General Practice caseload with an experienced clinical team and strong in-house diagnostic capabilities. This is an opportunity to remain genuinely hands-on with your own patients while helping shape medical standards, develop the veterinarians around you and contribute to the continued growth of the hospital.
Role Description and Responsibilities
This role combines the full scope of clinical veterinary practice with responsibility for leading the medical side of the hospital. You’ll continue seeing your own patients while overseeing standards of care, developing medical policies and helping ensure the different areas of the practice work together as one team. Mentorship is a significant part of the position, with responsibility for coaching the veterinarians around you, monitoring DVM performance, holding regular doctor meetings and providing guidance when more challenging cases or client concerns arise. You’ll work closely with the Hospital Manager and wider leadership team around recruitment, hospital performance, new equipment and opportunities to introduce additional services, giving you genuine input into how the practice develops rather than simply taking on a senior clinical title. This opportunity is suited to an experienced veterinarian, with 3–5+ years of veterinary practice experience required alongside strong diagnostic, surgical and dental skills.
Practice Details
The hospital provides a full scope of GP services alongside daytime Emergency and Urgent Care, Internal Medicine, Cancer Care and Cold Laser Therapy, with comprehensive dentistry and surgery also available. Equipment and clinical capabilities available include, but are not limited to, Digital Radiography, Digital Dental Radiography, an In-House Laboratory and Cold Laser Therapy, while the hospital also provides PennHIP examinations and certification submissions. Ultrasound is available through a mobile ultrasonographer, giving the team access to additional diagnostic imaging when required. The hospital is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and is closed on Saturdays and Sundays, with Emergency and Urgent Care cases accommodated during regular business hours when possible.
Team
You’ll be leading an established 3-DVM team alongside an experienced group of Registered Veterinary Technicians, Patient Care Assistants, client service professionals and dedicated hospital management. There’s already plenty of clinical experience within the practice, so the Medical Director role is as much about bringing people together, encouraging collaboration and helping good veterinarians continue developing as it is about providing day-to-day clinical oversight. You’ll work closely with the Hospital Manager while remaining part of the clinical team yourself, giving you the chance to lead from within the hospital, bounce ideas around with the doctors and help shape the culture without becoming disconnected from everyday patient care.
