Job Description
Introduction
An established veterinary hospital in West Virginia is seeking an experienced Medical Director to join its team on a full-time basis, with the opportunity for future partnership and equity ownership. Operating across two nearby locations in Charleston and Saint Albans, the practice provides comprehensive veterinary care with a primary focus on small animals alongside some large-animal medicine. The position combines an active clinical caseload with responsibility for medical leadership and the continued development of the hospital, providing an opportunity for an experienced veterinarian to influence clinical standards while maintaining substantial autonomy over their own medicine.
Role Description and Responsibilities
The Medical Director will combine hands-on clinical practice with responsibility for the medical leadership and continued development of the hospital. The clinical component encompasses the full scope of General Practice responsibilities, including wellness and preventive care, diagnostic investigation, treatment planning, dentistry, surgery and ongoing medical management, alongside opportunities to manage Urgent Care presentations and large-animal cases where appropriate. The successful veterinarian will provide clinical leadership to the wider veterinary and support teams, helping maintain high standards of medicine, supporting effective clinical protocols and workflows, and contributing to a collaborative working environment. The position requires an experienced veterinarian proficient in general medicine, surgery and dentistry and provides flexible scheduling, medical autonomy and the opportunity to progress towards future ownership.
Practice Details
The hospital provides a full scope of GP services, alongside Urgent Care, advanced diagnostics, Orthopedic Surgery, Laser Therapy and Large-Animal Medicine, with additional services including boarding and nutritional care. Equipment and clinical capabilities include, but are not limited to, Digital Radiography, Ultrasound and an In-House Laboratory, supporting blood testing, urinalysis and additional diagnostic investigation on site. Surgical capabilities encompass both Soft Tissue and Orthopedic procedures, while the large-animal service includes reproductive care, herd health management and farm calls. Urgent presentations are assessed and treated during normal hospital hours, with patients requiring overnight or 24-hour Emergency care directed to an appropriate Emergency facility. The Saint Albans location is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, while the Charleston location operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
Team
The practice operates across two nearby locations with an established veterinary and support structure. The current combined team includes four veterinarians, supported by a Practice Manager, three Registered Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, reception professionals and additional support staff. The incoming Medical Director will provide clinical leadership within this established structure while working collaboratively with the veterinary and technical teams across medical, surgical and diagnostic cases.
