Job Description

Introduction
An established companion animal veterinary hospital in Montpelier, Virginia is seeking an experienced Medical Director to lead its clinical team while maintaining an active veterinary caseload. Situated in rural Hanover County, approximately 25 minutes north of Richmond, the hospital provides comprehensive veterinary services encompassing General Practice, Internal Medicine, Dentistry, Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging and Preventive Medicine. The practice offers a varied clinical environment with particular strengths in Soft Tissue Surgery, Dental Medicine and Senior Pet Care, supported by experienced veterinary professionals and longstanding relationships within the local community. The position combines hands-on veterinary medicine with clinical leadership, providing the opportunity to mentor colleagues, maintain high medical standards and influence the future development of the hospital. Planned investment in the practice will support facility modernisation and the potential introduction of additional clinical services, including Rehabilitation, Acupuncture and Advanced Dentistry, according to the incoming Medical Director’s interests. Full-time and part-time arrangements are available, with a weekday-only schedule, no on-call responsibilities and opportunities for professional development and practice ownership.

Role Description and Responsibilities
The Medical Director will combine clinical leadership and team development with the full scope of GP responsibilities, maintaining an active caseload across Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, Dentistry, Surgery and ongoing medical management. The position involves overseeing clinical standards, supporting consistent medical protocols and encouraging effective collaboration across the veterinary and support teams. Leadership responsibilities include mentoring veterinary colleagues, supporting clinical decision-making, contributing to professional development and promoting a positive working environment. The successful veterinarian will work closely with the Practice Manager and wider hospital leadership to identify opportunities for operational improvement, develop clinical services and guide the planned modernisation of the practice. The position offers considerable influence over the hospital’s clinical direction, including opportunities to introduce new treatment modalities or expand existing services according to individual expertise. Applicants should have at least three years of clinical experience, with an interest in veterinary leadership, mentorship and practice development. The role provides the opportunity to combine independent clinical practice with meaningful responsibility for the hospital’s continued growth and long-term clinical development.

Practice Details
The hospital provides comprehensive veterinary services for dogs and cats, including Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, Dentistry, Soft Tissue Surgery, Pain Management, Senior Pet Care, Puppy and Kitten Care, vaccinations, parasite prevention, nutritional management and diagnostic investigation. Surgical capabilities include routine spaying and neutering, tumour removal, laceration repair, hernia repair, cystotomy, splenectomy, foreign body removal, limb amputation and corrective eyelid procedures. Additional surgical services encompass Cryosurgery, Oral Surgery, minor oronasal fistula repair, selected jaw fracture repair and oral tumour removal. The practice maintains a dedicated surgical suite and recovery facilities, with intravenous fluid therapy and continuous anaesthetic monitoring available for surgical patients. Diagnostic equipment includes Digital Radiography, Ultrasound, Echocardiography, Electrocardiography (ECG) and Dental Radiography, alongside an In-House Laboratory providing blood chemistry testing, heartworm screening, urinalysis and faecal examinations. Dental services include professional dental cleaning, polishing, dental extractions and advanced oral surgical procedures. Additional facilities include boarding and grooming services and an Online Pharmacy. The hospital is preparing for further investment and modernisation, with opportunities to expand clinical capabilities in Rehabilitation, Acupuncture and Advanced Dentistry. The practice is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, and is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Team
The hospital operates as an established three-veterinarian practice, supported by Licensed Veterinary Technicians, veterinary assistants, reception personnel and an experienced Practice Manager who oversees day-to-day operations. The veterinary team brings extensive experience across General Practice, Soft Tissue Surgery, Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Preventive Medicine and the care of selected pocket pets. The support team includes a Lead Licensed Veterinary Technician and additional credentialed technicians with experience in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. The incoming Medical Director will provide clinical leadership within this collaborative environment, supporting veterinary mentorship, shared case discussions and the professional development of clinical personnel. The position offers the opportunity to strengthen an established veterinary team while guiding the hospital’s future clinical development and planned expansion of services.
