Job Description
Introduction
This non-profit small animal hospital in McCall, Idaho is seeking a Medical Director to lead its veterinary team and help shape the future of its clinical services. Operating alongside a community animal shelter, the hospital provides comprehensive veterinary care for cats and dogs while placing a strong emphasis on accessibility, compassionate medicine and community involvement. This is an opportunity for an experienced veterinarian with at least five years of clinical experience to combine hands-on medicine with clinical leadership, team development and the continued growth of a mission-driven organisation.
Working Hours / Rota
The hospital typically operates Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm, with weekends closed and no after-hours or weekend on-call requirements. Both full-time and part-time arrangements are available, with full-time hours generally ranging from 30 to 40 hours per week. Scheduling is flexible around individual preferences, with a typical week including a dedicated surgery day alongside general appointments, preventative care and urgent cases. Doctors receive a protected one-hour lunch break and dedicated time for medical records, with appointment lengths and daily caseloads tailored to support effective patient care.
Role Description and Responsibilities
As Medical Director, you’ll combine clinical responsibilities with leadership of the hospital’s medical services, helping establish clinical direction, maintain high standards of patient care and support the development of the veterinary team. Alongside managing your own caseload across general medicine, surgery, dentistry and urgent care, you’ll contribute to hospital administration, budgeting, operational planning and community outreach. You’ll work collaboratively with veterinarians, technicians and hospital leadership to develop clinical processes, support accessible treatment options and maintain a positive, team-focused culture. The position is suited to a veterinarian with at least five years of clinical experience who enjoys mentoring colleagues, values technician involvement and is passionate about delivering high-quality medicine while supporting the wider community.
Practice Details
The hospital currently works with a Senior Veterinarian, Staff Veterinarian and Relief Veterinarian, supported by approximately two to three technicians per doctor, with additional assistance available on surgery days. The facility includes three examination rooms, a spacious treatment area with a wet table, a surgical suite renovated in 2024, digital radiography, dental radiography, ultrasound, an IDEXX in-house laboratory, laser therapy and electronic medical records. Clinical services include preventative medicine, internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, comprehensive dentistry, same-day urgent care and daytime emergency stabilisation, alongside veterinary care for animals within the associated no-kill shelter. The hospital operates primarily as a conventional fee-paying practice but also provides affordable treatment through flexible care plans, subsidised funding and a dedicated charitable fund for lifesaving treatment. The team follows Fear Free principles where possible and places a strong emphasis on collaboration, clinical autonomy and ensuring technicians can work to their full capabilities.
