Introduction
An established Emergency and Specialty veterinary hospital in Huntersville, North Carolina is seeking an experienced Emergency Services Medical Director to lead its emergency department while maintaining an active clinical caseload. The hospital provides comprehensive 24-hour Emergency and Critical Care alongside advanced referral services encompassing Internal Medicine, Surgery and Avian and Exotic Animal Medicine. Serving the greater Charlotte region, the facility maintains strong relationships with referring veterinary practices and provides a multidisciplinary environment for the management of complex medical and surgical cases. The position combines hands-on Emergency Medicine with departmental leadership, offering the opportunity to mentor emergency clinicians, maintain high medical standards and contribute to the continued development of the hospital’s emergency service. The successful veterinarian will work closely with hospital leadership and board-certified specialists, with clinical autonomy and professional development opportunities supported by an established veterinary organisation.

Role Description and Responsibilities
The Emergency Services Medical Director will combine clinical Emergency and Critical Care responsibilities with the leadership, management and development of the hospital’s emergency department. The position involves maintaining an active emergency caseload while overseeing clinical standards, developing medical protocols and supporting consistent quality of care across the service. Leadership responsibilities include mentoring and coaching Emergency Veterinarians, coordinating the training and onboarding of new clinicians, addressing performance concerns and encouraging professional development within the department. The successful veterinarian will work alongside hospital leadership on veterinary recruitment, retention, scheduling and team engagement, while leading clinical discussions, case reviews and quality improvement initiatives. Additional responsibilities include managing escalated client concerns, supporting colleagues through complex client communications and promoting effective collaboration between emergency clinicians, specialists and veterinary support personnel. The role requires strong clinical judgement and established Emergency Medicine experience, with previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred. The position offers the opportunity to influence departmental operations, strengthen clinical protocols and contribute to the continued growth of the emergency service while remaining directly involved in patient care.

Practice Details
The hospital operates as a comprehensive 24-hour Emergency and Specialty veterinary facility, providing Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Soft Tissue Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Avian and Exotic Animal Medicine. The practice treats dogs and cats alongside birds, reptiles and small mammals, including rabbits and guinea pigs, with dedicated specialist services for exotic patients. Surgical capabilities encompass advanced Soft Tissue and Orthopedic procedures, supported by specialist consultation and multidisciplinary case management. Diagnostic equipment includes Computed Tomography (CT), Digital Radiography, Ultrasound, Endoscopy and an On-Site Laboratory, alongside an In-House Pharmacy providing medications and prescription diets. The hospital supports advanced diagnostic investigation, emergency stabilisation, critical care hospitalisation and specialist referral management, with established referral pathways for patients requiring complex medical or surgical treatment. Emergency services operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and public holidays. Specialist appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Team
The hospital operates with a team of six Emergency Veterinarians, a Board-Certified Surgeon who also serves as Medical Director, and a dedicated Exotic Animal Specialist. The clinical team is supported by more than 25 full-time veterinary technicians and assistants providing continuous patient care across the emergency and specialty departments. The incoming Emergency Services Medical Director will work closely with hospital leadership to oversee the emergency team, support veterinary mentorship and professional development, and maintain effective collaboration between emergency clinicians and specialist services.

Candidate Requirements 

• Must hold the relevant degree(s) and additional qualifications to work as a veterinarian in the United States of America (USA)
• Must hold, be in the process of, or be able to obtain, a state license for the state they are applying to work in
• Must have the right to work in the United States of America (USA), or be able to obtain the required visa to do so
