Job Description

Introduction
An established mixed companion animal and exotic veterinary hospital in Elkin, North Carolina is seeking an experienced Managing Veterinarian to lead its clinical team while maintaining an active veterinary caseload. The hospital provides comprehensive veterinary services for dogs, cats, birds, pocket pets and selected reptiles, offering a varied clinical environment encompassing General Practice, advanced diagnostic investigation, Dentistry, Surgery and Exotic Animal Medicine. The position combines hands-on veterinary medicine with clinical leadership, providing the opportunity to mentor colleagues, maintain high medical standards and contribute to the continued development of the practice. The hospital has established strong relationships within the local community and offers a collaborative working environment supported by experienced veterinary professionals. Flexible scheduling, continuing education resources and structured leadership development opportunities are available.

Role Description and Responsibilities
The Managing Veterinarian will combine clinical leadership and team development with the full scope of General Practice responsibilities, including wellness and preventive care, diagnostic investigation, treatment planning, dentistry, surgery and ongoing medical management. Clinical duties include examining patients, diagnosing and treating medical conditions, interpreting diagnostic findings, prescribing appropriate medications and performing surgical procedures within the veterinarian’s capabilities. The position also involves managing a varied caseload encompassing dogs, cats and exotic companion animals, with opportunities to utilise or further develop relevant species-specific clinical expertise. Leadership responsibilities include maintaining clinical standards, supporting compliance with veterinary regulations and professional guidelines, mentoring veterinary colleagues and promoting effective communication across the clinical team. The successful veterinarian will contribute to the development of clinical protocols, encourage collaborative case management and support the continued professional development of veterinary and support personnel. The role provides an opportunity to influence the practice’s clinical direction while maintaining direct involvement in patient care and long-term client relationships.

Practice Details
The hospital provides a comprehensive range of General Practice and Exotic Animal veterinary services, including Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, Dentistry, Soft Tissue Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Urgent Care during normal operating hours. The practice treats dogs and cats alongside birds, pocket pets and selected reptiles, with dedicated services for avian and poultry patients. Surgical capabilities include routine and advanced Soft Tissue procedures, fracture repair and other Orthopedic procedures. Diagnostic equipment includes Digital Radiography, Ultrasound, Full-Mouth Dental Radiography and an In-House Laboratory, supporting medical investigation, dental assessment and surgical planning. Dental services include ultrasonic scaling, polishing and treatment of dental disease, while additional clinical services encompass parasite management, nutritional advice and ongoing care for patients with chronic medical conditions. The hospital also provides boarding facilities for dogs, cats, birds and small mammals. The practice is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Patients requiring emergency treatment outside normal operating hours are referred to external emergency facilities.

Team
The hospital operates as an established three-veterinarian practice, supported by an experienced, cross-trained team of veterinary assistants, kennel personnel and administrative staff. The veterinary team brings extensive clinical experience, including a longstanding practitioner with interests in Avian Medicine and Exotic Animal Care, a veterinarian with previous practice ownership and leadership experience, and a more recently qualified veterinarian with interests in Preventive Medicine, Dentistry and Soft Tissue Surgery. The incoming Managing Veterinarian will provide clinical leadership within this collaborative environment, supporting colleagues through mentorship, shared case discussions and continued professional development. The wider support team contributes to patient handling, hospital operations, client communication and the coordination of medical and surgical care. The position offers the opportunity to build upon an established clinical culture, strengthen team development and contribute to the continued growth of the hospital while retaining the clinical autonomy associated with locally led veterinary practice.
