Job Description
Introduction
Our client is a privately owned veterinary hospital seeking a Medical Director to lead their dedicated and high-volume practice. The clinic provides care for small animals, pocket pets, and occasional exotics. While these species are seen, the incoming Medical Director is not required to treat exotics or pocket pets and may focus solely on dogs and cats, which make up the majority of the caseload. The hospital offers a mix of general practice, urgent care, and emergency services and supports a wide range of clinical interests, including GP, emergency medicine, and surgery. With seven DVMs and services available seven days a week, the team is well-established, experienced, and open to strong clinical leadership.
Working Hours / Rota
The hospital is open seven days a week from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm. Most doctors, including the Medical Director, work four, 10-hour days with a 1.5-hour lunch break and see 30-minute appointments. Weekend coverage is part of the schedule, with each doctor typically working one weekend day (Saturday or Sunday), though the hospital is flexible and open to scheduling discussions to ensure work/life balance while meeting business needs. Full-time is preferred.
Role Description and Responsibilities
The Medical Director will oversee the medical operations of the hospital while maintaining a clinical caseload. This is a high-volume general practice role with exposure to a wide range of cases including surgery, dentistry, wellness, and urgent care. The incoming leader will collaborate with the practice manager, oversee medical protocols, provide mentorship, and contribute to a positive team culture. There is strong support for a candidate with a surgical focus, and the hospital is seeking an experienced veterinarian ready to take on a leadership role and contribute to the long-term vision and clinical excellence of the practice.
Practice Details
The hospital is well-equipped with digital x-rays, dental x-rays, a full in-house lab, endoscopy, and ultrasound, as well as weekly access to a visiting ultrasonographer. Avimark is used for medical records, and the facility recently underwent a major expansion, now housing three surgical suites, 12 exam rooms, and six wet tables. While not yet AAHA-accredited, certification is a future goal. The hospital has proudly served its community for over 40 years and is highly regarded for its collaborative culture, excellent client care, and robust support systems. Services offered include advanced procedures such as orthopedic and brachycephalic surgeries, PRP injections, emergency surgeries (explanatories, splenectomies, caesarean sections, endoscopies), and routine procedures like spays/neuters, mass removals, and anesthetic dentals. The practice also features a comprehensive in-house pharmacy and diagnostic capabilities.
Team
The hospital is home to seven DVMs and approximately 70 support staff. Each doctor is supported by one to two dedicated room nurses, along with additional RVTs and veterinary assistants, allowing clinicians to focus on medicine. The environment is collaborative, with multiple doctors on-site daily and strong administrative and operational support. The incoming Medical Director will be joining a stable, experienced team known for its strong mentorship, team cohesion, and commitment to high-quality care.
