Our client is an emergency veterinary hospital seeking an Emergency Veterinarian to join their after-hours medical team. This hospital provides dedicated emergency and critical care services exclusively for dogs and cats, supporting Trussville, Birmingham, and the surrounding communities when urgent, life-threatening situations arise. As an emergency-only facility, it offers a high-acuity caseload and a dynamic clinical environment ideal for doctors who thrive in fast-paced medicine and critical decision-making.

Working Hours / Rota
The hospital operates during all hours when general practices are closed, ensuring pets receive immediate care during nights, weekends, and holidays. The schedule offers both full-time and part-time flexibility and consists of overnight and weekend shifts. The facility remains open continuously from Friday through Monday, and overnight hours run from Tuesday to Thursday, creating predictable scheduling patterns and extended blocks of time off during the week. These shifts involve no daytime wellness care and no additional after-hours requirements outside the hospital’s emergency schedule.

Role Description and Responsibilities
The Emergency Veterinarian will oversee the triage, stabilization, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of urgent cases, including trauma, respiratory distress, toxicities, heatstroke, GDV, envenomations, and complex surgical emergencies. Daily responsibilities include performing emergency examinations, interpreting diagnostic results, managing fluid therapy and oxygen support, conducting emergency surgical procedures, providing wound management and stabilization, and communicating clearly with clients during high-stress situations. The role is open to both experienced veterinarians and new graduates who demonstrate strong foundational clinical skills, confidence, and a commitment to developing their expertise in emergency medicine.

Practice Details
The hospital is equipped with advanced diagnostic and critical care tools including digital radiography, in-house blood analyzers, an emergency surgical suite, endoscopy, oxygen therapy systems, and established transfusion protocols. This allows the team to respond rapidly to severe medical conditions and provide comprehensive emergency support. The caseload ranges from common illnesses requiring urgent intervention to highly complex and time-sensitive emergencies.

Team
The veterinarian will work alongside a cohesive team of licensed technicians, experienced assistants, and skilled client service staff who are familiar with the demands of emergency medicine. The clinical environment encourages open communication and teamwork, allowing the veterinarian to focus on medical decision-making while being fully supported throughout each shift.

Candidate Requirements 

• Must hold the relevant degree(s) and additional qualifications to work as a veterinarian in the United States of America (USA)
• Must hold, be in the process of, or be able to obtain, a state license for the state they are applying to work in
• Must have the right to work in the United States of America (USA), or be able to obtain the required visa to do so
