Job Description

Introduction
An established Emergency and Specialty veterinary hospital in Manassas, Virginia is seeking an experienced Emergency Department Head Veterinarian to lead its emergency clinical team while maintaining an active caseload. Serving Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C. region, the hospital provides comprehensive 24-hour Emergency and Critical Care alongside specialist referral services encompassing Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, Ophthalmology and Surgery. The hospital treats more than 13,000 patients annually, providing a substantial and varied clinical environment with opportunities to manage complex emergency presentations and collaborate with board-certified specialists. This full-time leadership position combines hands-on Emergency Medicine with departmental management, offering the opportunity to mentor veterinary colleagues, maintain high clinical standards and contribute to the continued development of the hospital’s emergency service. The position provides clinical autonomy and opportunities for professional development within a collaborative, multidisciplinary referral environment supported by an established veterinary organisation.

Role Description and Responsibilities
The Emergency Department Head Veterinarian will combine active Emergency and Critical Care responsibilities with the clinical leadership and operational management of the hospital’s emergency department. Working closely with the Medical Director, the successful veterinarian will oversee emergency services, maintain clinical standards and support the development of effective departmental procedures and workflows. Clinical responsibilities will encompass the assessment, stabilisation and treatment of emergency patients, including those presenting with acute medical conditions, traumatic injuries and complex surgical emergencies. Leadership duties include participating in the recruitment, onboarding, mentoring and training of Emergency Veterinarians, developing and maintaining the emergency clinician schedule and supporting the continued professional development of the clinical team. The position also involves coordinating case transfers between Emergency Medicine and specialist departments, maintaining effective relationships with referring veterinarians and contributing to the resolution of escalated client concerns. Additional responsibilities include supporting the Medical Director with departmental planning, encouraging collaborative clinical decision-making and promoting a positive working environment across the emergency service. The role offers the opportunity to influence departmental development while retaining direct involvement in emergency patient care.

Practice Details
The hospital operates as a comprehensive Emergency and Specialty veterinary referral facility, providing Emergency and Critical Care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and public holidays. Specialist services include Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, Ophthalmology and Surgery, alongside Urgent Care for patients requiring prompt assessment of non-life-threatening conditions. The hospital provides advanced medical and surgical management for a varied referral caseload, including complex internal medical conditions, oncological disease, ophthalmic disorders and patients requiring specialist surgical intervention. Surgical services encompass advanced Soft Tissue and Orthopedic procedures, supported by multidisciplinary collaboration between emergency clinicians and specialist teams. The facility manages more than 13,000 patients annually and provides continuous emergency assessment, stabilisation, hospitalisation and critical patient monitoring. The practice is well equipped with modern diagnostic equipment, supporting emergency investigation, specialist consultation and the management of complex medical and surgical cases. Emergency services operate continuously, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with specialist consultations available through the hospital’s established referral departments.

Team
The hospital operates with a multidisciplinary team of Emergency Veterinarians, board-certified specialists, certified veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants and client service personnel. The published clinical team includes specialists in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, Ophthalmology and Surgery, alongside an established group of emergency clinicians. Hospital leadership includes a Medical Director and Hospital Director, providing clinical and operational support across the emergency and specialist departments. The incoming Emergency Department Head Veterinarian will work closely with these leaders to oversee the emergency team, coordinate mentorship and training, and strengthen collaboration between emergency clinicians and specialist services. The position offers the opportunity to support the continued development of a substantial emergency department within an established referral hospital.
