Job Description
Introduction
A welcoming small animal hospital in Santa Cruz, California is looking to hire an Associate Veterinarian to join its close-knit team. Providing care for dogs and cats, the hospital has built its approach around thoughtful, individualized medicine and creating a genuinely comfortable experience for both pets and their owners. It is also a Silver Certified Feline Friendly Practice, with processes and facilities specifically designed to reduce stress for feline patients, making this a particularly nice opportunity for someone who values compassionate, low-stress care alongside high-quality medicine.
Role Description and Responsibilities
This role encompasses the full scope of General Practice responsibilities, giving you the opportunity to take ownership of a varied caseload across preventive medicine, diagnostics, treatment planning, soft tissue surgery and dentistry. There’s a strong emphasis on being thorough when working through cases rather than simply treating symptoms, with the hospital placing particular value on critical thinking, follow-up and making sure clients genuinely understand what is happening with their pet. You’ll have the freedom to use your own clinical judgement while working alongside an experienced veterinary team, with plenty of opportunity to collaborate on cases and make use of relationships with local specialists when additional expertise would be helpful.
Practice Details
The hospital provides a full scope of GP services alongside Acupuncture, Behavioral Care and Genetic Testing, with strong medical, diagnostic, dental and soft tissue surgical capabilities available in-house. Equipment and clinical capabilities available include, but are not limited to, Digital Radiography, Digital Dental Radiography, a modern IDEXX In-House Laboratory with blood and urinalysis capabilities, a sterile surgical suite and comprehensive anesthetic monitoring equipment. Advanced ultrasound is available through a mobile radiologist, while the hospital also works closely with board-certified surgeons, cardiologists, oncologists, radiologists, dermatologists and ophthalmologists when more specialized input is needed. The hospital is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
Team
You’ll currently be joining a 2-DVM team, including the hospital’s Medical Director, alongside an established group of Veterinary Assistants and client service professionals. There’s a nice amount of experience to draw on within the hospital, particularly across small animal medicine, soft tissue surgery and geriatric feline care, while the wider team has a strong focus on continuing education and keeping up with developments in veterinary medicine. The hospital puts a lot of value on creating an inclusive and supportive environment, giving you people to bounce ideas off and work through cases with while still having the independence to develop your own relationships with clients and take ownership of your patients.
