Job Description
Introduction
For a veterinarian who wants exotics and avian medicine to be a meaningful part of their career rather than the occasional unusual appointment, this AAHA-accredited hospital in Quakertown, Pennsylvania is looking to welcome an Associate Exotic/Avian Veterinarian, with full-time and part-time opportunities available. The hospital treats an exceptionally broad range of species, with the exotic caseload including birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, ferrets, rodents, reptiles and other special species. With General Practice, Emergency and Specialty medicine all available within the same hospital, there’s plenty of scope to develop a varied caseload while having a large and experienced clinical team around you for support.
Role Description and Responsibilities
This role gives you the opportunity to build a caseload around Exotic and Avian Medicine, managing patients across preventive care, diagnostics, medical case management, dentistry, hospitalization, Emergency presentations and Soft Tissue Surgery. The hospital’s large and varied caseload provides plenty of opportunity to gravitate towards the areas that interest you most, with additional scope to develop skills across surgery, dentistry, Ultrasound, Endoscopy and other areas of medicine as your interests evolve. Clinical autonomy is actively encouraged, but you’ll be working within a large multidisciplinary environment where there are plenty of experienced veterinarians to discuss cases with and learn from. Applications are welcomed from both experienced veterinarians and new graduates, with a formal mentorship Programme and hands-on development available for someone at the beginning of their career.
Practice Details
The hospital is AAHA accredited and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, bringing General Practice, Emergency and Specialty medicine together within the same facility. Its Exotic service provides preventive medicine, diagnostic investigation, dentistry, hospitalization, Emergency Care and surgery for a particularly diverse range of species. Equipment and clinical capabilities available include, but are not limited to, Digital Radiography, Ultrasound, Endoscopy and Rhinoscopy, alongside extensive Laboratory, Dental, Surgical and Hospitalization capabilities. The wider hospital also provides services across areas including Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Behavior Medicine and advanced Surgery, creating a strong multidisciplinary environment when an exotic or avian patient would benefit from additional clinical input. Routine appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM, while Emergency services remain available 24/7/365.
Team
You’ll be joining a particularly large and diverse veterinary team, with clinicians working across small animal, Emergency, exotic and special-species medicine alongside multiple specialty disciplines. Importantly for this position, there are already veterinarians within the team with dedicated interests and experience in Exotic, Avian and Zoopanion Medicine, including an Emergency and Special Species Veterinarian, so there are people around you who genuinely understand this type of caseload. The wider team also includes clinicians working in Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Surgery and Behavior, creating plenty of opportunities to bounce ideas off colleagues and approach more complicated cases collaboratively. For a newer veterinarian, the hospital provides a formal mentorship Programme, while an experienced Exotic/Avian Veterinarian will have the autonomy and case volume to continue developing their individual areas of interest.
