Job Description

Introduction
A long-established small animal hospital that has been part of the La Mesa, California community for more than 65 years is looking to hire a full-time Associate Veterinarian. Working primarily with dogs and cats, the hospital combines the personal feel of a longstanding community practice with a modern approach to medicine and a real emphasis on giving its veterinarians the freedom to practice in their own way. It’s a particularly nice opportunity for someone who values clinical autonomy but still wants an experienced and genuinely collaborative team around them.

Role Description and Responsibilities
This role encompasses the full scope of General Practice responsibilities, giving you the opportunity to take ownership of a varied caseload across wellness, medicine, diagnostics, surgery and dentistry. Clinical autonomy is a big part of the opportunity, with the hospital trusting its veterinarians to use their own knowledge and judgement rather than dictating how they should practice medicine. The average caseload sits at around 16 patients per DVM each day, giving you plenty of variety while still allowing you to stay involved throughout your patients’ care and build genuine relationships with clients. There’s also a strong emphasis on continued development, with generous continuing education support alongside access to a wider network of veterinary professionals for collaboration and round-table discussions.

Practice Details
The hospital provides a full scope of GP services, with a caseload spanning preventive medicine, diagnostics, dentistry and surgery alongside illness and injury care. Equipment and clinical capabilities available include, but are not limited to, Digital Radiography, Digital Dental Radiography, Diagnostic Ultrasound, an In-House Laboratory and a Surgical Laser, giving you a strong range of resources for working cases up and managing them within the hospital. The practice also provides Emergency Care during its operating hours, pet boarding and a full-service pharmacy. The hospital is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Saturday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and is closed on Sundays.

Team
You’ll currently be joining an established 4-DVM team, including a Medical Director, with the hospital operating at around a 2:1 support-staff-to-doctor ratio. There’s a huge amount of experience within the veterinary team, with two of the doctors having each spent more than three decades in veterinary medicine, alongside newer additions who bring their own perspectives and experience to the practice. The hospital describes the team as close-knit and welcoming, with a genuinely collaborative approach to cases and highly skilled support staff helping doctors make the most of their time. That gives you plenty of people to bounce ideas off and learn from, while still having the independence to practice medicine in the way that works best for you.
